Saint Raymond of Penafort Religious Education

One of the most important responsibilities of any parish is to provide Religious instruction to all, but most especially to the children. At St. Raymond's this is accomplished through daily religion classes for those children who attend St. Raymond's Catholic School. For those children who attend public, private or charter schools, instruction is provided through the C.C.D. or Sunday School program which is conducted on Sunday mornings from 10:00 - 10:50, September to May.

When a child reaches the age which allows him/her to receive one of the sacraments, that child must be actively participating in one of the above religious education programs.

Children not attending St. Raymond's school must be enrolled in the Sunday school program for one full school year prior to the reception of the Sacraments of Reconciliation/ First Holy Communion and Confirmation. Thus, since Confirmation is generally administered in the fall, a child must have been attending Sunday school classes the entire previous school year to be admitted as a candidate.

While it is essential for children to receive formal religious instruction prior to reception of the sacraments, the importance of on-going religious education cannot be emphasized enough. In order to be guided by the faith, instruction should take place all through a child's formative years; at least from grades 1 through 8 for those not attending a Catholic School.

Adults too recognize the importance of continued education in the faith. St. Raymond's offers several opportunities for those who have finished their formal education to refresh their knowledge and understanding of Scripture and the teachings of the Church through weekly Bible Study and seasonal Adult Education programs. In addition, many programs are offered through St. Charles Seminary, the Office of Black Catholics and the St. Peter Claver Center. Look for information about these programs in the weekly bulletins, also published in this website, or contact the Director of Religious Education for more information.
